Introduction

This edited collection features scholarly voices with attention to horror in its transmedia representations, including film, literature, comics, art, branding, and more. Chapters give attention to the ways that fans take up the realities and ideas presented in horror, the affordances of the genre, and participation in this network of storytelling. The reactions of readers/viewers/fans, the decisions of creatives, the presentation of ideas within particular forms of media, and more form elements of the researched conversation in this volume.

Objective

This collection seeks to advance conversation about the theoretical functions of horror across media including notions of adaptation and literary/literacy-based choices in the work. This includes, but is not limited to, design structures, cultural influences, the role of lore, (re)considerations of the monstrous, embodiment in the genre, sub-genre considerations, and more.

Target Audience

This book is intended for academics in media, literacy, literature, communication, and interdisciplinary fields. Students enrolled in courses in these fields can benefit from this knowledge as they pursue courses of study and further academic work in these disciplines.

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 17, 2026, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by July 31, 2026 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines.Full chapters of a minimum of 10,000 words (word count includes references and related readings) are expected to be submitted by October 30, 2026, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at https://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/ prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-anonymized review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.

Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Theory and Practice in Horror Transmedia Fandom and Creation. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-anonymized peer review editorial process.
