Online symposium: 14 JUNE 2024

We invite abstracts for the fourth online symposium of the Haunted Shores network!

In keeping with the expansive remit of the network, papers are welcome to explore any aspect of coasts, shores, beaches, and coastal waters in the Gothic, horror, weird, and related genres. We are also delighted for papers to engage with the idea of “haunted shores” in any other genre, media, or cultural discourse, from any period and any national tradition.

We are glad to receive submissions from students and scholars (at any level of degree/career), creative practitioners, curators and those in the heritage sector, policy makers, and so on! We’re especially receptive to first-time presenters and are happy to discuss ideas with you ahead of abstract submission.

As with previous events, papers will be pre-recorded and made available via Teams channels for several days ahead of a single day of live online panels and discussion. Papers should be between 10-15 minutes long.

Haunted Shores

Haunted Shores is a global interdisciplinary research network that seeks to explore the rich literary and cultural history of coastal and littoral spaces in literatures of terror. For centuries our literature, art, and culture have regarded coastlines and shores with both wonder and anxiety, liminal spaces that shape identities and ideologies. From nineteenth-century shipwrecks to twenty-first century kaiju, the constant reappearance of coastal spaces in a diverse array of what might loosely be termed “Gothic media” demonstrates the ongoing need for in-depth study. The Haunted Shores Network aims to bring together researchers from around the globe to facilitate a space for learning and knowledge sharing.

The network hosts a monthly reading group and is developing a strong history of publication off the back of its online events – including a British Library anthology, a special issue of Gothic Nature, and a forthcoming edited collection with University of Wales Press.
