Hotel Reservations for SSAG conference

Participants in the inaugural conference of the Society for the Study of the American Gothic have two options.

The Hawthorne Hotel, where the main sessions will be held, is a charming historic hotel which bills itself as the most haunted hotel in America.  To make a reservation, you will need to call 978-744-4080 and ask for the American Literature Association rate for Group Code AM0321.  That should secure you the conference rate of $179 plus taxes.  You may also have to wait on hold if you call when the front desk staff is particularly busy, which usually happens during check-in and check-out times.  You are most likely to avoid a wait if you call from 10 am to 2 pm (Eastern time) or in the evening.

The Hampton Inn in Salem is a modern hotel about a 10–12-minute walk from the Hawthorne Hotel or less than a five-minute drive.  It is a particularly good choice if you prefer modern to historic hotels, or are a Hilton points members, or prefer being able to make your reservations on line.  The ALA hotel rate will average out to about $169 plus taxes if you are staying four nights, but the actual rate is $189 for Friday and Saturday and $149 for Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights. You can book by clicking on the following link: Hampton Inn

You can also call 800-HAMPTON to make reservations, but will need to reference the “American Literature Association” Group.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.   We have been able to reserve only 40 rooms at the Hawthorne Hotel and there is no prospect of increasing that block at the conference rate except for Wednesday or Thursday night.  We currently have 25 rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn with assurances that we probably will be able to increase that block. The block rate at the Hawthorne Hotel is only good until March 1, but it will be filled before then. The Hampton Inn will be more likely to work with us on increasing the room block if we ask sooner rather than later.

If you have any problems making a reservation, please contact Professor Alfred Bendixen at [email protected] and he will try to help.
